Meet the New Raven Tools

Five tools.

That’s where Raven started more than six years ago — with just a handful of tools for SEOs.

These days we have more than 30+ tools covering nearly every aspect of marketing you can think of — SEO, social, content, PPC and more.

Because we love creating new ways to help you work smarter and faster (or maybe because we drink a lot of Red Bull), our platform has grown in every direction.

But starting today, we’ve put all the pieces together in a simple new way. I’d like to introduce you to the new, completely redesigned Raven.

If a redesigned platform isn’t enough to get you excited, we’re also debuting a new rank checker I think you’ll really like — a simple way to view and report ranking results from authorized data sources. More on that in a minute.

First, let me give you a tour of Raven’s new look and feel.

Get To Know the New Raven

A clean, simple design gives you more room to work and paves the way for a more responsive app, while a completely re-thought navigation puts what you need at your fingertips quickly.

You’ll still find all the Internet marketing tools you know and love from Raven but with a few key differences.

New vertical navigation

Moving Raven’s navigation from the top of the screen to the left is one of those simple changes that makes a huge difference. I think you’ll be amazed at how it brings you new focus. You’ll be able to see more data at once, especially data that’s in list or table form, which saves you time.

It’s also a more responsive design, so you can make the most out of working in Raven no matter what your screen size is.

Better tool organization


We reorganized our tools into sections that make sense for the marketing strategies you use every day: SEO, Social, Content and PPC, with Research and Reports sections on either end.

The change should help you work faster and find what you’re looking for more quickly. It also unearths some of Raven’s “buried treasures” that shouldn’t really be buried. You’ll might find some very useful tools and integrations I bet you didn’t know we had.

More Google Analytics goodness


Raven’s Google Analytics integration has always been useful, but now it’s crazy good. In the new Raven, you can quickly view and report Advanced Segments and Google Analytics Goals for truly personalized data and insights.

You can also get specific about where your traffic is coming from with Raven’s new geolocation stats that go all the way to city level.


Introducing campaigns


Marketers generally refer to what they do in terms of campaigns — and now Raven does, too. Introducing Campaigns, formerly known as Websites in Raven.

Campaigns are where you store your data and work for a site — whether social, PPC, SEO or content. And it’s also the name of a new section in Raven’s navigation, where you’ll find tools and features like Google Analytics, Site Performance, Competitor Manager and others that make sense to use campaign-wide.

Now, About That Rankings Tool…

Your clients want rankings. We’re committed to authorized data to make sure Raven stays around for you in the long run.

So we found a simple way to deliver the best of both worlds — a rank checker and report that rivals traditional ranking tools and reports, but with authorized data.

Raven’s new rankings tool uses your Google and Bing Webmaster Tools data to display accurate ranking information for your website’s keywords.

But here’s what’s really awesome: you can see your rank for each keyword side-by-side with impressions, click-through rate, visits, conversions, search volume and other Google Analytics and Google AdWords metrics that matter, providing unparalleled insights.


Each column is sortable, and additional buttons allow you to filter by branded or non-branded keywords, what’s ranking or what isn’t. Raven will store all this data for the life of your account so you can study, report and analyze it to your heart’s content.

  • Obviously, I haven’t had a chance to fully explore, but I wanted to post part of my email to Jon here:

    I’ve been “complaining” about lack of regional GA reporting for at least a year.

    While I recognize that the voice of one user isn’t (and shouldn’t be) impetus for adding a feature, it still feels good when something that was painfully needed is added.

            I’d like to know :

            Concerning Social Media, do you have some insights you can share about a Google+ integration inside Raven (ability to schedule and post on pages).

            And Twitter mention is great, but I can’t see Twitter Private messages ? If we start using Raven as our main Dashboard for SEO and Social, Twitter messages are mandatory. 🙂

            And finally for Twitter as well, there are a few things that would definitely be great :
            – The ability to “Archive” mentions or DM once we took care of them
            – The ability to check a “Discussion History” with a particular user.

            It’s like you’re reading our minds! 😉 Social media upgrades are the very next thing on our list – including many of these. Google Plus is dependent on an API we can use (only a handful of tools have access so far) but all else is very do-able!

Especially for us who are working in a non English environment (and who are searching for keyword insights in our own language so… ^^). 🙂

        Yes please PLEASE do. That little smooth line makes sense of the jagged ups and downs of regular analytics. Gives the client a sense of progress (when it’s headed upwards hopefully!)

        Yes, please do. That trend line was very useful.

        While you’re at it, consider fleshing it out a bit. Offer what’s known in financial trading as simple moving averages (SMA) – like the trend line, but even better and more flexible (number days it’s calculated on can be chosen by the user).

        Would be nice to see when site traffic is suddenly above the 50 day moving average. Fellow traders will know how this can be useful. It basically means that that trend is broken, in a positive manner.

    Congratulations, Raven got even better! Only one thing: I keep missing a place that consolidates all “conversions” in a single number, as Google Analytics does. It would be great if it appears at Campaigns > Google Analytics > Summary.

      The number that I told can be found at Google Analytics (Conversions > Goals > Overview – Item “Goal Completions”). It provides all conversios from the website in a single place. It helps when you have a client with many goals set.

    Hey Guys, well done! I’m super happy as I can now cancel another software I was using, saving $100/month (yay!). One thing (not sure if it’s just me) but I can’t seem to find any option to include conversion data in AdWords (under campaigns)? it doesn’t seem to be in the display options area? Not that I can edit everything in raven anyway, but it would be nice to get a quick snapshot of the CPA.

    Also, in terms of SEO rankings, I’m going to assume they take some time to populate? thanks for your great work guys – you’ve raised the bar!

      Hi Uli! If you’re not seeing the option to add conversion metrics in the AdWords metrics section, please let us know at And yes, GWT rankings can take up to 24 hours to populate. Anything else that seems off, just let us know at that email address. Happy to hear you like what you’re seeing so far – and can save some money!

        I don’t believe there is a conversion column available in the dashboard > PPC > Adwords. Also, no cost per conversion column in the dashboard > PPC> Adwords Metrics. I don’t believe this is a new issue unique to the new UI.

    My issue with the rankings tool is that, even in your example, most of the columns return no data. I know this is due to the data limitations of GWT, but to create a useful report that is not full of blanks, you kind of end up pairing the columns back to just average position / position change % / impressions / impression change % and perhaps GA visits / conversions.

    However, the average position reported seems to be a whole lot higher than the positions we currently report on (again due to GWT data), so still does not present great compared to current rankings report we produce.

    • It definitely presents a different way at looking at ranking data. That was one of the reasons why I wrote this post:

      For example, I have a low traffic blog with a not well known two-word brand name. While my brand technically ranks 1st in Google, GWT has zero data on it. Why? Because zero people are searching for it, it gets zero impressions and zero clicks. It’s a bit of a paradigm shift, but if there are certain keywords that have no data, then there’s a 99% chance they don’t perform well or at all. The biggest difference is that our ranking tool – based on data from GWT and BWT – is performance based versus the old way of “does it rank?”.

      I’m not suggesting that this is what you want or need, because it may not be. However, I am saying that if used as a performance and insights tool, it can be quite powerful. It can also be used for clients if you help them understand that it’s reporting performance, not simply the rank. And that certain campaign keywords that have little to no data may still rank, but currently don’t have any traction in the SERPs.

    My other comment would be re the login screen, the blue background presents an issue in regards to our branding for white labelled client access. This may not seem like a huge deal, but if our creative director saw it as it is now (doesn’t look great with our custom logo colours) he would have kittens. If we could set the colour (a neutral like white), that would be preferrable. Thanks.

      We are very confident – that’s the beauty of using authorized data! In fact, we’re replicating a method that Google recommends. We use a “Restricted” account that you set up and then our system exports and imports the data into your account. Since it’s authorized straight from the source, it’s dependable for the long run.

    Great redesign overall. As a designer (as well as an SEO), I enjoy the clean layout with the blue and gray together. It looks clean, not sterile, and that is really great. The navigation makes reviewing a lot easier. The wider layout is my favorite!!!! I feel like I can see everything.

May need to re-sign up for Raven as I decided against using it when rank tracking was dropped, though the new rank tracker looks kick ass!

    Dear RavenCourney (and kind community here),

    Our small firm is new to offering SEO as an in-house service. We’ve been outsourcing it for a few years to greater and then lessor satisfaction and profitability, but the advent of Raven and client interest is fueling a desire to take the jump, do the hires, and own this skillset.

    Then into this otherwise simply upbeat and encouraging trend came a big (cold) wet blanket today: we started our first SEO position interviews and ran into two different “SEO Pros” (who knows, but anyway…) that balked when encountering our job requirement line item reading “Must be, or be willing to become, oun in-house Raven SEO guru”.

    I’m hoping you or you all can set me straight here. The reason for the rejection in both cases was “…we only do white-hat SEO!” and, paraphrasing here, “…Raven and all those kinds of apps are, no matter what they claim, black-hat solutions”.

    Please enlighten us: what’s with all the hats and which color, now flying our SEO flag with Raven colors, are we??

        • David, we’re one of the only SEO apps that doesn’t use scraped data (something that Google in particular frowns upon). Also, black hat has to do with highly risky tactics and sometimes illegal practices. There’s absolutely nothing about our software that encourages or enables people to do black hat SEO. Like Gyi said, they obviously have no idea what Raven is or does.

      Raven is a toolset meant to help SEOs with the tasks they perform, like researching websites, building relationships through social media/email/etc., writing and sharing content and building links. A tool is just a tool – it doesn’t have a hat of any color. 😉

      I’d encourage you to keep hunting for a more experienced SEO – a good one will likely be familiar with a variety of tools, including Raven. And you can always have them check out a Raven 101 webinar to get a better idea of how the tools work with an SEO strategy:

          Sorry, I am not aware of any sort of public list that Google keeps of tool-makers who are on its good side (though that would be an interesting read!).

          I CAN tell you that every piece of data within the Raven platform comes from an authorized partner or integration, including our new rankings tool that incorporates data from Google and Bing Webmaster Tools.

      Lol really, raven is black hat seo,, I’m going to watch the best of screaming goats on youtube. I hate to be blunt. But don’t offer seo services if you don’t know what white hat and black hat seo is, and don’t rely on potential employes to dictate to you what the industry is. You have to go out and get some industry eduction. I admit, i did like raven more before the big scraped data issue, and if you don’t know what that means, please outsource your seo to me and I’ll take care of everything. Have a good one!

        Anyone with good intention and a valid contribution to make (to others, to a conversation, in a forum like this), however differing their opinion, need not hide behind anon user names or make critical claims without any references to a set of facts from which the are drawing their conclusions.

        Do you have a sincere point of concern about the compliance or capacity of Raven to be a credible tool of whitehat SEO agencies and practices? Or did you come here just to take a cheap shot?

        The former seems wholly invited here by Raven staff and community and the later, by all reasonable experience, is of little interest or value to others.

          First, Raven is mainly a reporting tool, with a few exceptions. So regarding your concern about black-white hat you should have nothing to worry about. To sum up a very big topic, true white hat seo marketing is creating good content for others to link to or share, the very act of creating a link in the eyes of google is black hat. Is this reality, no. The reality is what’s considered white hat seo can be considered black hat next week. It’s part of the industry. Let’s take pr’s or press releases. It’s pretty standard and good practice to release 1 major press release per month. Well alot of folks really abused pr’s and google put the hammar down and updated it’s spam guidelines- you may want to visit googles webmaster forum. Now most and all pr vendors such as pr webb, prwire are now tagging links as no-follow. I can explain what no-follow is if you like. The bottom line is that most companies in this biz operate in the grey hat world.
