As the iPhone-at-Verizon dust settles…
What were your first thoughts when Verizon announced the iPhone would be available on the wireless network? Did you rejoice in the promise of actually making phone calls with the iPhone? Or did you think of major implications to the mobile market, wireless carrier competition and technology advancement? Here’s what caught analysts’ attention following this week’s news:
Of course there was the to-be-expected speculation on iPhone sales numbers. Estimates range from 9 million to 12 million iPhones activated on the Verizon network in 2011.
Where will these new customers come from? According to data collected last year, 51 percent of current Verizon customers said they were likely to purchase an iPhone if it were available through the wireless service carrier. In the same survey, 47 percent of AT&T iPhone users said they would consider switching to Verizon if the iPhone was available.
AT&T’s position is to brush off the coming competition from Verizon by dismissing Verizon’s CDMA network capabilities, including the inability to use the Web while on a call. Rival wireless networks are also reacting to the news. A new T-Mobile ad campaign pokes fun at both AT&T and Verizon.
As for competition among device makers, recent reports indicated that the Android mobile operating system is growing in market share, at 26 percent. Research In Motion has struggled to hold the lead, dropping from nearly 38 percent last August to 33.5 percent of the market currently. Most analysts expect the availability of the iPhone with Verizon will cut into the growing Android market share.
